The pulmonary function test measures lung volumes and airflow rates to catch early signs of asthma, COPD and occupational lung diseases. In workplaces with dust and chemical exposure, periodic PFT is one of the two pillars of health surveillance alongside the chest X-ray.
Tests are performed with spirometers calibrated daily to ATS/ERS standards, using a single-use mouthpiece for each employee. FVC, FEV1 and FEV1/FVC values are interpreted against age, height and sex references, and changes over the years are reported graphically.
